The reason Why I've migrated from Gentoo to Debian

Gentoo, my old love. My linux favorite disto for 3 and a half years. My almost perfect OS ... The trick is in the details, one has said. Here the word "almost" is the key. The key to the answer - is gentoo the perfect OS.

No, definitely not. Every update, every portage sync is like debuging, building again and again. It's true, that if everything is ok, gentoo is fast. I mean, really, REALLY FAST. But the effords, the endless hours of building, rebuilding, fixing things. 80% of the time, gentoo reserves for itself.

If you're a software enthusiast, if you want to experiment most of the time with linux, gentoo is for you. If you are a developer like me, you dont have the luxury to spend hours on building libs, or apps, which are supposed to be in working stage. To be rock solid.

That's why I chose Debian. Debian is the most usefull, stable, mature and ready-to-use linux distro I've ever seen. Slackware is stable, too. Ubuntu is stable, and easy too. But the package system of Debian, the "apt" magic beats everything. Updating, upgrading things is a breeze. Software compatibility, stability - everything is just ok.

So good bye, Gentoo ... And if one day everything is ok, just give me a sign. Till then, hello Debian ;-)
